“There lay the green shore of Ireland, like some coast of plenty.”

                  - Ralph Waldo Emerson, 1856

Ireland

People long for Ireland in a way that they pine for few other countries. Call it romantic, call it sentimental, but there is something about this remarkable country that tugs at the heartstrings of even those who have no Irish blood. The beauty of the country, its powerful Gaelic traditions and the irrepressibly romantic and creative nature of the Irish people underscore this potent appeal.

Ireland was first settled in 6000 BC by Europeans who discovered the land rich in copper and gold. Not much is known of the original Celtic-speaking tribes or of those who erected the great stone megaliths that dot the country but there are thousands of prehistoric sites in Ireland: on the remote western seaboard, on the Beara peninsula, in County Kerry, and at exceptional places such as Newgrange burial complex, in county Mearth north of Dublin – all of which are hauntingly evocative.

Dublin is the boisterous heart of Ireland, “the family home.” Dubliners are easy-going, friendly, and eager to share their city with visitors. Pubs serve as the local gathering spots, and over a Guinness stout or with a glass of Irish whiskey, stories will be exchanged, songs sung, fiddles played and friends will be made. Dublin is rich in architecture of the 18th century, a period in history when the city enjoyed special prominence. You will find museums, stores, theatres and restaurants to match those anywhere else in Europe, all suffused by the richness of Irish culture and by a modern sophistication.

Ireland’s nickname, the Emerald Isle, is inspired by the brilliant hues of green that the paint the countryside…Ireland’s “forty shades of green.” Touring Ireland, one finds the island is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the south, west, and northwest; and the Irish Sea and St. George’s Channel to the east. Northern Ireland, part of the United Kingdom, occupies the far northeastern corner of the island. There is varied terrain from mountains of solid rock to soft and spongy peat bogs, lakes, rivers, rolling pastureland, verdant glens and wooded valleys. Many castles have become splendid hotels with an unsurpassed level of service, cuisine and wine. Travelers can enjoy the Gaelic lifestyle and visit world-class spa facilities as well. A trip to Ireland is as multi-faceted as the gregariousness of the people, the spontaneity of their music, the complexity of their history, the richness of their culture – enjoy the high energy of Europe’s Celtic Tiger!
