“Not all the seductions of Vienna, nor the dominion of a German bureaucracy have broken
the stubborn heart of the Czech.”
-
From A History of Europe, by English historian H. A. Fisher
Czech Republic
The Czech Republic is surprisingly rich both in natural beauty and in historical monuments.
Anyone who travels to this country does not soon forget sights such as the ponds and golden
wheat fields that glitter harmoniously against a backdrop of gently rising hills, or the
underground secrets of the Moravian Karst. As beautiful as it is, however, this country is
first and foremost a paradise for lovers of history and art. Over three thousand castles,
palaces, chateaux, and manor houses are scattered throughout the country. Sleepy medieval
towns remain much as they were hundreds of years ago. In addition, superb performances in
various arts attest to this country’s vibrant cultural life.
Goethe proclaimed the capital city of Prague to be “the most precious stone in the crown of
the world.” Its title of “Golden City” barely conveys the color and elegance of its historic
center; painted medieval facades glinting pink and green and silver in the sun, a jumble of
rust-red rooftops; mellow stone, turquoise domes, steel-grey Gothic spires. Prague’s buildings
and streets span 1,000 years. Wandering the cobbled passageways and alleys thus becomes the
highlight of any visit.
Marienbad and Karlovy Vary are two of the oldest and most famous spa towns.
Karlovy Vary is a renowned health center where twelve mineral springs are used for medicinal
and well-being treatments. It also has been a cultural center since Bach, Beethoven, Goethe
and Twain visited for treatments and writing holidays. Today, film and music festivals are
regularly held in Karlovy Vary.
